Launching Doughnut Economics Action Lab!

This week is a big week for Doughnut Economics.

It’s the online launch of Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) – and at the heart of it is the Community Platform, a place for the growing worldwide community to connect, share, inspire and get inspired by the many ways people are putting the ideas of Doughnut Economics into practice.

The growing community of change-makers

To get the ball rolling, DEAL is launching with more than 40 open-access tools and stories that have been written by community members and by the DEAL Team. These are a mix practical guides that everyone can use to take action, and captivating initiatives from around the world that will engage and inspire others.

Inspiring stories from the community in action

Doughnut Economics began nine years ago as an idea on the back of an envelope. Now we are turning that idea into action with a fast-growing global community. It’s a perfect moment to reflect on the journey, and all that we have learned so far about what makes an idea fly.

Here are Six Insights, as set out in my latest blog, posted on Poverty to Power.

We hope you’ll join us in the community at Doughnut Economics Action Lab!

  1. Thanks, Kate, for this interesting post. At the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences we are now exploring the options under the H2020 Green Deal call to support European cities in operationalising the donut economy. We need to act quickly to seize this opportunity. Could we talk? Mark van Wees.

  2. I am very glad to join this Community and to have opportunities to learn a lot how to be part of the transformation based on Doughnut Economics.

And I was well surprised when I got access to some tools and info and I also found it in Portuguese language. It will be very helpful to share with others….

  3. The idea of this as new economics is brilliant.  I have on several occasions referenced this in speeches. And I have in the past reached out for an interview with Kate Raworth as I find her book so well written. However, I have two issues which I must raise.1) the metaphor of a doughnut is not so great. Just think it is fried white flour with loads of  sugar – which does nothing for one’s health and wellbeing in general.  And it is worse not so good for Black and Indigenous people. Especially Black hybrids in the Americas .. so prone to diabetes. And being enslaved in part because of European demand for sugar.
I have taken to calling it LifeSaver of LifeBuoy Economics instead.

    2) I am concerned as to the true value and intentions of the DEAL Lab project.   I have reached out several times over the last nine years to explore how to help amplify this idea in Washington DC development circles. And each time I have either been met with silence or a rebuff. polite but a brush off nonetheless. Considering this was way back when the book first came out… I wondered Why? I was thinking maybe it is because I am ‘not a famous economist’? or a major media house. Yet I have influence over quite a few people. So I am now concerned that you have launched this DEAL Lab with less that good intentions. Is this just about publications and research or is it because you really wan to make change? Because the attitude of working only with ‘Ministries’ is not a winning proposition in many communities and countries where things last as long as the party is in power.  What is your intention regarding making long-lasting change if you ignore those of us who seem not to have met your standards for connection.

    3) Could you please share with us the DEAL LAB Inclusion and Diversity Policy. I Could not find it on the website. Thank you.
